Convert image — free online tool

Switch images between JPG, PNG and WebP in the browser, one file or a batch of 12. Transparency, flattening and quality 92 are handled for you.

Convert images

Choose one output format for every selected image.

What to know

Converting rewrites the same picture in a different container, so the pixel dimensions stay put while the way the data is stored changes. The page offers three targets, JPG, PNG and WebP, and WebP is preselected. Open a specific converter such as JPG to PNG and the target is locked, which avoids picking the wrong format by accident.

The three formats differ in ways that matter. JPG is lossy and has no transparency. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, which also makes it the heaviest for photographs. WebP can be lossy or lossless, supports transparency and is usually the smallest of the three. Lossy outputs are written at quality 92, a high setting that keeps edges clean.

Transparency is the main edge case. Going to JPG draws the image onto a white background first, because JPG cannot store alpha; going to PNG or WebP keeps the transparent pixels as they are. Conversion never adds detail, so turning a low-quality JPG into a PNG gives a lossless copy of the already degraded picture, usually a much larger file, not a better one.

A batch takes up to 12 files and 48 MB, processed one after another in the browser, and each output is named after its source with a convert suffix and the new extension. When a converter would produce a format your browser cannot encode, the tool reports the problem instead of saving a mislabeled file.

How to use Convert image — free online tool
  1. Drop the JPG, PNG or WebP files you want to switch (12 at most) into the page.
  2. Check the Convert every file to field; WebP is the default and variant pages lock it to their own target.
  3. Run the conversion and watch the progress through the batch.
  4. Download each converted file and open one to confirm that the format and any transparency are as expected.

Quick answers

Which format should I convert to for the smallest file?

WebP is usually the smallest, followed by JPG for photos. PNG is the largest for photographs but the best for flat graphics with transparency.

What happens to transparent areas when I convert to JPG?

They become solid white, since the image is drawn on a white background before it is encoded. PNG and WebP outputs keep the transparency.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG stores the pixels losslessly, but the JPEG artifacts are already in them, so the file only grows. Convert to PNG when you need transparency support or lossless editing later.

Can I convert several formats at once?

All files in one batch go to the same target format. Mixed JPG, PNG and WebP inputs are fine, and each is written in the format you chose.
