JPG to WebP converter — free online tool

Convert JPG to WebP for lighter web pages. Lossy WebP at quality 92 keeps photos clean, with the result often well below the original JPG size.

What to know

JPG to WebP is the conversion people run to make a site faster without redesigning anything. WebP uses a newer compression method than JPG, and a photograph that took 800 KB as a JPG will often fit in noticeably less once written as WebP, with no change in dimensions.

The converter writes lossy WebP at quality 92. That is a deliberately high setting, so a photograph keeps its fine detail and smooth gradients, and most of the saving comes from the better codec rather than from throwing information away. It does mean a second lossy generation on top of the JPG, so convert from your original JPG rather than from one that has already been recompressed several times. If you want a much smaller file, run the WebP through the WebP compressor and lower the quality there.

A JPG has no transparency to preserve, so there is no flattening step here; the result is a standard opaque WebP. If you later need transparency, WebP supports it and a PNG can be converted to the same format.

Browsers that were released in the last several years display WebP everywhere, but some email clients, older image editors and print shops still prefer JPG. Keep the original JPG for those cases. Files are processed in your browser, up to 12 at a time with a 48 MB total.

Quick answers

How much smaller will a WebP be than my JPG?

It varies by image. Smooth photos usually save the most, while detailed or already heavily compressed JPGs save little. The result list shows the exact size of each output.

Is there any visible quality loss when going from JPG to WebP?

At quality 92 differences are hard to see at normal size, but it is a second lossy encode. Zoom to 100% on edges and text to compare.

Can I use WebP everywhere I use JPG?

On current browsers and most modern apps, yes. Some email programs, older editors and print services do not accept WebP, so keep the JPG for those uses.

Does a JPG to WebP conversion keep the camera EXIF data?

No. The image is redrawn on a canvas and encoded fresh, so metadata such as GPS and camera model is not written to the WebP.
