OriginalDrag directly on the preview to define the crop.

What to know

Cropping removes pixels rather than rescaling them. The part you keep stays at its original resolution, which is why a crop from a 24 megapixel photo can still print well even when the visible area is a small fraction of the frame. If you need a certain output size afterwards, crop first and resize second.

The crop box starts as the full image. Drag on the preview to draw a new selection, drag inside it to move it, and pull a corner handle to resize. A readout beside the controls shows the live size in pixels, so you can aim for numbers such as 1080 x 1080 instead of judging by eye. With the image focused, the arrow keys nudge the box and Esc resets it to the whole picture.

Five ratio buttons shape the selection: Free, 1:1, 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9. A locked ratio holds while you drag, so a 16:9 box over a 4000 x 3000 photo spans at most 4000 x 2250. Selections are rounded to whole pixels and can never be smaller than one pixel or leave the picture.

The cropped file keeps the format of the original and is encoded at quality 92 when that format is lossy. Typical jobs are trimming screenshots, squaring a profile picture, and cutting a banner from a wider shot; for fixed social sizes, the social media resizer does the crop and the scaling together.

Quick answers

Does cropping reduce the quality of what I keep?

The kept pixels are copied unchanged, though a JPG or WebP is encoded again at quality 92. The area simply gets smaller, and nothing is rescaled.

How do I crop to an exact pixel size?

Draw a box, watch the width x height readout and adjust with the arrow keys until it matches. For an exact output size from any box, crop to the ratio first and then resize.

What does Esc do while cropping?

It resets the selection to the whole image, which is handy after dragging the box into a corner by accident.

Which ratio should I pick for a profile photo?

Use 1:1. Platforms that show avatars in a circle crop a square, so keep the face in the middle with some margin.
