What to know

Resizing changes the pixel grid of a picture, which is different from shrinking its file. A 4000 x 3000 photo scaled to 1200 pixels wide is redrawn from fewer samples, so it weighs less as a side effect, but the goal here is the dimensions themselves: a blog column, a marketplace listing, a thumbnail slot.

There are two ways to give the target. In pixel mode you type a width and height, with the box defaulting to 1200 x 800. With the aspect lock on, the picture is fitted inside that box without distortion, so a 4000 x 3000 source becomes 1067 x 800, because the height limit is the tighter one. Percentage mode scales by a slider from 5 to 200 percent and is the only mode used when you drop several files, so every image keeps its own proportions.

A guard called Do not enlarge smaller images is switched on by default. It stops a 600 pixel thumbnail from being stretched to a blurry 1200 pixels just because the box is larger, and you can turn it off when you really want the extra size.

The output keeps the source format, so JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG and WebP stays WebP, and lossy files are encoded at quality 92. If your next step is making the file lighter rather than smaller in pixels, finish here and then pass the result through the compressor.

Worked example

Pixel dimensions describe the width and height of an image. A 2400 × 1600 image has a 3:2 aspect ratio: reducing its width to 1200 while keeping that ratio gives a height of 800. This is different from cropping, which removes part of the image.

A file-size limit such as 200 KB is not a pixel dimension. After resizing, inspect the exported file size; use image compression if it is still above the upload limit. Upscaling cannot guarantee new detail.

Quick answers

Why is my 4000 x 3000 photo 1067 x 800 and not 1200 x 800?

With the aspect lock on, the image is fitted inside the 1200 x 800 box. The scale is the smaller of 1200/4000 and 800/3000, which is 0.2667, giving 1067 x 800.

What happens to a file smaller than the box I typed?

With Do not enlarge smaller images on, it is left at its own size. Untick the option to scale it up, and expect softer edges.

Why is the pixel option disabled for several files?

Different photos have different proportions, so one width and height pair would distort some of them. Batches use a percentage so each image scales by the same factor.

Does resizing change the file format?

No. The output uses the format of the input file, and lossy outputs are saved at quality 92.
