Worked example

Keep the original JPEG and decide what you need first: the PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly, compression damage included.

Zoom a 3000 × 2000 px photo to 300 percent and look at skies, skin and dark corners. Blocky patches and ringing around sharp edges are already baked into the JPEG, and a PNG made from it will store those flaws faithfully and permanently. Converting does not clean them up.

A graphic designer who needs a lossless working file for a layout tool has a good reason to convert. Someone hoping for a transparent background or a sharper picture does not, because the PNG will have no alpha channel and no extra detail. For a transparent cutout use the background removal tool first.

The usual mistake is converting a small web thumbnail and expecting print quality. Check the pixel dimensions in your file properties before starting, and pick the largest version of the picture you have, not a chat or email copy.

Do one planning check: estimate the output. A photo that is 1.8 MB as JPEG often becomes several times larger as PNG, and one batch accepts up to 12 images, 48 MB of input and 64 MB of output, so a handful of large photos can fill it.

If the JPEG came from a phone, also check that it displays upright in your viewer, because a wrong orientation is easier to fix before the file is converted.

What should I check before publishing an edited image?

Open the exported file and check its dimensions, file size, fine text, edges, and transparency at the size where it will be used. Resizing changes pixel dimensions; compression targets file size. Enlarging an image does not guarantee recovery of missing detail. Keep your original so you can export again with different settings.
