JPG to PNG converter — free online tool
Turn a JPG into a PNG for lossless editing or transparency workflows. The PNG will not look better than the JPG, and it is usually several times larger.

What to know
A JPG becomes a PNG when the next step needs a format that survives repeated saving. Each time a JPG is edited and saved, it is compressed again and drifts further from the original; a PNG keeps the pixels exactly as they are after this conversion, so you can edit and export as often as you like without further loss.
It is worth being clear about what the conversion cannot do. The blocky halos and softened detail that JPEG compression introduced are already part of the pixels, and PNG stores them faithfully. The picture will look identical, not cleaner. Nor does it create transparency: a JPG has a solid background, and the PNG you get has the same solid background, so cutting out a subject needs the background remover.
File size is the cost. PNG has no lossy mode, so a typical photograph saved this way is several times the size of the original JPG, and a 3 MB camera file can easily become many megabytes. Convert only the images that really need PNG, such as a master for a design file or a logo that will be touched up.
Dimensions stay unchanged and the output is named with a convert suffix and a .png extension, so the original is never overwritten. Up to 12 files and 48 MB can be converted together in your browser.

Quick answers
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
JPG throws away detail to stay small, while PNG keeps every pixel exactly. A photograph has millions of slightly different pixels, which PNG cannot compress as well.
Will converting JPG to PNG give me a transparent background?
No. The pixels, including the background, are copied as they are. To remove a background, use the AI background removal tool, which outputs a transparent PNG.
When is JPG to PNG the right choice?
When you plan to edit the image repeatedly, or when a program, print workflow or upload form accepts only PNG. For publishing photos, JPG or WebP is better.
Does the PNG remove compression artifacts?
No. Artifacts in the JPG are preserved exactly, so the PNG shows the same blocks and halos at the same locations.
