What to know

PNG to JPG is the usual route when a photograph or screenshot arrived as PNG and has to be smaller, or when a form only accepts JPG. A PNG of a photograph can be many times larger than the same picture as a JPG, and the quality 92 setting used here keeps the visual difference slight.

The one thing to plan for is transparency. JPG cannot store an alpha channel, so before encoding, the picture is drawn onto a white background and every transparent pixel becomes white. A logo with a transparent surround therefore gains a white box, which is fine on a white page but visible on a colored one. For the details of how that flattening works, see the white background variant.

Know what you give up. Flat graphics, interface screenshots and text are where PNG shines and JPG struggles: you may see faint halos around letters and thin lines, and colors in large uniform areas can shift very slightly. If crispness matters more than file size, keep it as PNG or choose lossless WebP through the compressor instead.

Dimensions do not change. Outputs are named with a convert suffix and a .jpg extension, and the batch takes up to 12 PNG files and 48 MB in the browser.

How to use PNG to JPG converter — free online tool
  1. Drop the PNG files into the page; the output format is locked to JPG.
  2. Run the conversion and note the size reduction on each result.
  3. Download the JPGs and zoom into text or edges to check there are no unwanted halos.
  4. If the white background looks wrong on your page, go back and keep the original PNG.

Quick answers

Why did my transparent PNG get a white background?

JPG has no transparency, so the tool paints the picture over white before saving. Every transparent pixel turns white.

Is PNG to JPG lossless?

No. JPG is a lossy format, so the picture is compressed with a small loss of detail at quality 92. If you need exact pixels, stay with PNG.

When should I not convert a PNG to JPG?

Skip it for logos, line art, screenshots with text, and anything that needs transparency. These look sharper and smaller as PNG or lossless WebP.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

A photographic PNG often shrinks to a fraction of its size, while a simple graphic may change little. The result list shows each file size so you can judge.
