Start with the permalink of one public Reel, ideally your own, and check that it opens without logging in.

A Reel link normally has instagram.com/reel/ followed by a short code. Copy it from the share menu rather than from a feed or a profile grid, because a profile address, a story or a live video is rejected with a message asking for one public content link. When you leave the field, Chatcument tidies the address, then loads a preview with the title, thumbnail, duration and dimensions.

Imagine a bakery that posted a 28-second Reel of its croissant lamination and later needs the video for a window screen. The owner pastes the permalink, sees a vertical clip around 1080 × 1920, and notes the duration. If the numbers on the preview do not match what she remembers, she knows she has the wrong Reel before downloading.

A frequent mistake is copying a shortened or redirected link from a messaging app, which may hide the real destination, or pasting the link of a Reel posted by a private account. Open the address in a private window first. Another is forgetting that the audio is often licensed music: the rights to the clip and the rights to the song are different things.

Last check: write down who owns the video, who owns the music or any people shown, and why you may keep a copy. If you made the Reel yourself, your original export from your editing app is usually the best-quality source, and this tool is the fallback when that file is lost.
