Worked example

Prepare a photo with a quiet corner for the mark, and a logo or text that stays readable at the final display size.

Open the photo and decide where the mark will sit. New layers start in the bottom-right corner with a margin of about 5 percent of the image, so check that this corner is not busy with faces, price tags or essential text. A photographer sharing a 2400 × 1600 px portrait should look at the face and the hands first, and keep the mark off both.

If you plan to use a logo, prepare a transparent PNG at least a few hundred pixels wide. A JPG logo carries its own white box, and a tiny logo stretched across 20 percent of a large photo becomes blurry. For text, write the exact string beforehand, such as a name plus a year, so you do not type it live over the picture.

The common mistake is testing the mark on a pale image with a white mark, or on a dark image with a black one. The default colour is white, so check the brightness of the area under the mark and decide whether to change the colour in the controls.

A quick check: shrink the preview in your mind to the final size, for example 1080 px wide on a phone, and ask whether a 4-character mark would still be readable there. If not, plan a larger mark or a stronger colour from the start.
