What to know
WebP can hold either lossy photographic data or lossless graphics, and it supports an alpha channel, so one resizer has to cope with banners, stickers and product shots alike. Here the file is decoded, redrawn at the new size and encoded again as WebP, which means transparent corners survive and the extension does not change.
The re-encode uses quality 92. For lossy WebP that is generous: files saved at 75 to 80 are common on the web, so a downscaled image from a high-quality source can come out heavier per pixel than the original even though it has fewer pixels. If you are chasing a small file rather than a certain width, resize first, then lower the quality in the WebP compressor.
A 2400 x 1600 hero image reduced with Percentage at 50% gives 1200 x 800, the same default box the pixel fields start with. A square 1080 x 1080 reduced with the lock on and a 600 pixel width gives 600 x 600 exactly.
Encoding WebP depends on the browser. If yours cannot write WebP from a canvas, the tool says so instead of quietly handing back a PNG with the wrong extension, and you can resize the same picture on the JPG or PNG page instead.

What if my browser says it cannot create WebP?
Some older browsers cannot encode WebP from a canvas. The tool reports the failure rather than saving another format, and a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari will work.
Does an animated WebP stay animated?
No. The file is drawn onto a canvas, which captures a single frame, so an animation would become one still image.
