What to know

Social platforms expect fixed canvases, and a camera photo almost never matches them. This page replaces the arithmetic with four presets: Instagram feed at 1080 x 1080 (1:1), Instagram portrait at 1080 x 1350 (4:5), Instagram Reel at 1080 x 1920 (9:16) and a YouTube thumbnail at 1280 x 720 (16:9). The output is always exactly that size.

Because most pictures have another aspect ratio, you choose how to fill the frame. Cover scales by the larger of the two ratios and crops the centered overflow; Contain scales by the smaller one and keeps the whole picture. Taking a 4000 x 3000 photo to the 4:5 portrait, Cover gives a scale of 0.45, a 1800 x 1350 intermediate image, and trims 360 pixels from each side. Contain gives 0.27, a 1080 x 810 picture, and leaves 270 pixel bars above and below.

The empty bars in Contain mode are transparent for PNG and WebP and become white in a JPG, since JPG cannot hold transparency. If you want a branded colour behind the photo, export with Contain and place the file on your background in a design tool.

Unlike the ordinary resizer, the social presets do not have a no-enlarge guard: a 600 pixel image is stretched to fill 1080, so start from the largest original you have. The file keeps its source format and carries the preset name in its file name, which makes a folder of four versions easy to tell apart.

Quick answers

Which size is right for an Instagram Reel cover?

The Reel preset is 1080 x 1920, a 9:16 vertical frame. A 4000 x 3000 landscape photo on Cover shows only the middle 42% of its width, since the scale is 0.64 and 1080 of 2560 pixels remain.

When should I use Contain instead of Cover?

Use Contain when nothing may be cut off, such as a product shot, a poster or a screenshot with text near the edges. Expect margins, transparent in PNG and WebP and white in JPG.

Does it work for a YouTube thumbnail?

Yes. The YouTube preset outputs 1280 x 720 at 16:9, and a 4:3 photo on Cover loses 120 pixels from the top and bottom of the scaled 1280 x 960 image.

Can I pick my own crop position?

Cover always crops around the center. To choose a different part of the picture, crop it yourself with the Crop tool using a matching ratio first, then apply the preset.
