What to know

PNG is the format for logos, interface screenshots, icons and anything with a transparent edge, which makes resizing it a different job from resizing a photo. The alpha channel survives the redraw, so a logo with a soft drop shadow keeps that shadow after you shrink it, and nothing is flattened onto white.

PNG has no quality setting, so there is no quality slider to worry about; the result is saved losslessly. What does change is the pixel content. Scaling uses high-quality smoothing, which suits photographs and gradients but will soften one-pixel lines and pixel art. An 1024 x 1024 app icon reduced to 512 x 512 is an exact half, which resamples cleanly, whereas awkward factors such as 1024 to 333 produce blurrier edges.

Screenshots are a typical case. A 2880 x 1800 retina capture scaled by 50% becomes 1440 x 900, the size most documentation pages expect. Because PNG stores flat regions efficiently, a screenshot usually shrinks dramatically in KB too, while a photographic PNG may barely change.

If the file is still heavy afterwards, the PNG compressor applies lossless optimization without touching dimensions. Doing the resize first and the optimization second gives the smallest result.
