What to know

Animated WebP stores 24-bit color where GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, so gradients and photographic content tend to look smoother and files are often smaller at the same dimensions. This page starts with WebP selected and encodes with libwebp at quality 80 and an infinite loop.

Audio is dropped on purpose, since animated WebP is an image format. A video with sound that goes through this export comes out silent.

Frame rate defaults to 12 fps and can be set to 6, 8, 12, 15, 18 or 24. Lower values give a smaller file but choppier motion, and a 3-second loop is 36 frames at 12 fps and 72 at 24 fps. The speed and direction menus are available, so you can slow a reaction to 0.5x before encoding.

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP in images, but some email clients, chat apps and older editors still expect GIF. Keep the original GIF as a fallback if you are unsure where the file will be opened. Because the GIF passes through an MP4 step first, transparent areas turn solid.

Quick answers

What quality setting does the WebP use?

Quality 80 with an endless loop. There is no quality slider on this page, so lower the output height or the frame rate to shrink the file.

Will the WebP be smaller than my GIF?

Often, especially for photographic or gradient content, but it is not guaranteed. A flat cartoon GIF with few colors can come out at a similar size.

Can a WebP made here contain audio?

No. Animated WebP is an image format, so the encoder is told to drop the audio track. Export MP4 if you need sound.
