What to know

GIF to MP4 sets the export format to MP4, which hides the frame rate, speed and direction menus because the file keeps the clip's own timing. Only the output height (480, 720 or 1080 px) and the canvas ratio matter here.

The video is encoded as H.264 with AAC audio at a 6 Mbps target. A GIF has no sound track, so the MP4 is silent unless you add another clip with audio to the timeline. Before the GIF reaches the timeline it is converted to yuv420p with width and height rounded down to even numbers, which H.264 requires.

Compared with the source, an MP4 usually weighs far less, because GIF stores each frame with a 256-color palette and weak compression while H.264 stores mostly the differences between frames. In exchange the MP4 does not loop by itself, so set the loop attribute in your player or page.

MP4 has no alpha channel, so any transparent area in the GIF becomes opaque. Plan for a solid background if the animation was designed to sit on top of other content, and test the result on the page where it will actually be shown.

Quick answers

Why does the MP4 have no sound?

A GIF has no audio track, so there is nothing to carry over. Add a video clip to the timeline if you want its audio in the result.

Does the MP4 loop like the GIF did?

Not on its own. Add the loop attribute to the HTML video tag or switch on the repeat option in your player.

Why is the width always an even number?

H.264 with yuv420p needs even width and height, so odd sizes are rounded down while the GIF is prepared. A GIF 853 px wide becomes 852 px wide.
