Color picker and palette extractor

Worked example

Give every color a role and a name, such as background, text and accent, each with its HEX and RGB, before you share.

Chatcument gives you copyable HEX and rgb(r, g, b) text for every swatch, so the hand-off is a short list you assemble yourself: --color-bg: #F0F0D8; --color-text: #303030; --color-accent: #C04830; and so on. Choose three to five colours rather than all eight, because a smaller set is easier for a team to apply consistently.

A café owner who wants her menu, website and window sign to match could send her designer one photo, the list of named colours and a note about which swatch is for text and which for highlights. The designer then does not have to guess whether the cream is the page or the card.

The usual mistake is sending only a screenshot of the swatch list, which loses the exact values and cannot be pasted. Send text. Also avoid renaming the same colour differently in different files; keep one table, and add a version suffix when the set changes.

Keep the source image beside the palette so the next person can rerun the extraction and see the same swatches. For print, remember that screen values need a proof from the printer, and if a client has official brand colours, those take priority over any extracted tint.

Open the exported file and check its dimensions, file size, fine text, edges, and transparency at the size where it will be used. Resizing changes pixel dimensions; compression targets file size. Enlarging an image does not guarantee recovery of missing detail. Keep your original so you can export again with different settings.
