What to know
The generator view is about design as much as export. Eight preview tiles at 16, 32, 48, 64, 180, 192, 256 and 512 px appear as soon as the image loads, drawn from the same 512 px square that the downloads use. Look at the 16 px tile first: it is the size a browser tab usually shows, and it is where most logos fail.
Small sizes reward simplicity. A single bold letter, a plain shape or a high-contrast glyph survives at 16 px, while a wordmark, a thin outline or a photo turns to mush. If your full logo is complicated, build a separate icon version, then feed that in. Leave a margin of roughly 6 to 10 percent inside the square so the mark does not touch the edge, because the picture is fitted without cropping and the tab adds no padding of its own.
Transparent backgrounds are kept in the PNG downloads, which suits tabs in both light and dark browser themes, but a dark logo on transparency can vanish on a dark tab. Test the 16 and 32 px tiles against a dark background in your head, or give the mark a solid backing shape. The 180 px output is for iOS home screens, where transparency is usually filled with black, so a solid background looks better there.
A short shipping list is favicon.ico, apple-touch-icon.png, and the 192 and 512 px files for a manifest. The 16, 32, 48, 64 and 256 px PNGs are what the ICO is made from, so keep them only if you reference sizes individually in link tags.

How to use Favicon generator — free online tool
- Load your simplified icon artwork, for example a 512 px square PNG with 8 percent margin.
- Study the 16 and 32 px preview tiles for legibility.
- If the 16 px tile is muddy, swap in a simpler image and compare again.
- Download favicon.ico, then the 180, 192 and 512 px PNGs.
Quick answers
Why does my logo look blurry in the 16 px tile?
Sixteen pixels hold very little detail, so thin lines and small text merge. Use a simpler, bolder icon version of the mark.
Does a transparent background work for the favicon?
It works in browsers, but a dark logo on transparency can disappear on a dark tab. A solid backing shape is safer, especially for the 180 px iOS icon.
How much margin should I leave inside the square?
Around 6 to 10 percent works well. The image is fitted without cropping, so any margin you design in stays.
Do I need all eight PNG sizes?
No. For most sites favicon.ico, the 180 px file and the 192 and 512 px files are enough.
