What to know
A PNG crop is the one case where a browser canvas gives you a genuinely lossless result. The selected rectangle is copied pixel for pixel, the alpha channel comes along, and the file is written back as PNG, so nothing about the kept area is approximated. That makes it the right tool for screenshots, logos, icons and sprite sheets, where a stray blurred edge would be visible.
Selections snap to whole pixels, and the readout beside the ratio buttons shows the exact width and height. A common job is trimming a 1920 x 1080 screenshot to a square: with the 1:1 lock the box is at most 1080 x 1080, and you slide it sideways to choose which 1080 columns survive. Another is cutting one 64 x 64 sprite out of a sheet using the arrow keys to land on the exact cell boundary.
Transparent pixels stay transparent, so cropping a logo with a margin of empty space is a fast way to remove the margin. Crop tightly to the visible edge, but leave a pixel or two if the artwork has a soft shadow, otherwise the fade will be cut off.
Because a canvas writes its own PNG, the cropped file can be larger than the original even though it has fewer pixels, especially if the original was already optimized. Run it through the PNG compressor afterwards to squeeze out the difference.
