What to know

This page opens with the Scale menu already on 2x, so the output has exactly twice the width and twice the height, which is four times the pixel count. A 1920 x 1080 frame becomes 3840 x 2160, the UHD 4K grid, and a 100 x 100 app icon becomes 200 x 200.

Doubling is the gentlest enlargement the canvas smoothing filter can do. Every new pixel lands halfway between old neighbors, so edges stay reasonably clean at the new size. That makes it a better fit for a thumbnail that is slightly too small for its slot, or for an @2x asset aimed at a high-density display, than a jump to 4x.

The ceiling is 64 million output pixels, so sources up to 16 million pixels can be doubled. A 4608 x 3456 photo (15.9 million pixels) still fits and produces 9216 x 6912, while a 6000 x 4000 camera frame would need 96 million pixels and has to be cropped or reduced first.

Nothing is sharpened and no detail is recovered. For print, a 1500 x 1000 image covers 5 x 3.3 inches at 300 dpi and 3000 x 2000 covers 10 x 6.7 inches, but the extra pixels are interpolated, so use the result for pixel minimums rather than for fine texture.

Quick answers

Does 2x mean double the width or double the area?

Each edge doubles, so the area and the pixel count quadruple. A 1920 x 1080 image has about 2.07 million pixels and the result has about 8.29 million.

What is the largest photo I can double?

One with up to 16 million pixels. A 4608 x 3456 photo works and gives 9216 x 6912, but a 6000 x 4000 photo exceeds the 64 million pixel output cap.

Is a transparent PNG still transparent after doubling?

Yes for PNG and WebP, because the output keeps the source format and alpha channel. A JPG has no transparency to begin with.

Can I still choose 4x here?

Yes. The preset only sets the starting value, and the Scale menu still lists 4x if you change your mind.
