What to know
Flipping creates a mirror image, which is a different operation from rotating. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, as in a bathroom mirror; a vertical flip swaps top and bottom, as in a reflection on a lake. No amount of rotation can reproduce either one, because a turn never changes handedness.
There is one setting to watch. The page uses the same controls as the rotate tool, and Rotation is preselected at 90 degrees when a file loads. For a pure flip, change Rotation to 0 degrees first, otherwise you will get a mirrored image that is also turned a quarter. Then choose Horizontal or Vertical in the Flip selector. When both are set, the mirror is applied to the source and the turn after, in one pass.
A common reason to flip is a selfie. Many front cameras show you a mirrored preview, and some apps save that mirrored version, so lettering on a shirt or sign reads backwards; a horizontal flip restores the true orientation. Other reasons are matching two photos of a subject facing opposite directions, preparing a mirrored layout for printing on transfer paper, and creating a symmetrical reflection effect with a vertical flip.
The picture is redrawn without changing its size, and the file is saved in its original format, with quality 92 for JPG and WebP. Flipping is reversible, since flipping the output again returns the original arrangement of pixels, though lossy formats pick up a little loss on each save.
