Worked example
Convert MP3 to WAV for uncompressed 16-bit PCM in an editor or DAW: the file grows 4 to 11 times, but the sound stays exactly that of the MP3.
The WAV export in Chatcument is plain 16-bit PCM, so the bitrate setting has no effect on it. Decoding freezes whatever the MP3 encoder produced, including the high-frequency cut-off, often around 16 kHz, that many 128 kbps files have, and no WAV can bring that range back.
Size math: 44,100 samples × 2 bytes × 2 channels is 176,400 bytes per second, about 10.6 MB per minute. A 3-minute MP3 at 128 kbps is 2.88 MB and becomes about 31.8 MB as WAV, roughly 11 times larger; a 320 kbps MP3 of 7.2 MB becomes the same 31.8 MB, about 4.4 times larger.
Use case: a video editor wants a clean timeline file, or a sound designer needs a stem for a plug-in that only reads PCM. Set Sample rate to 48000 only when the project runs at 48 kHz, which is common in video; otherwise Keep source avoids a needless resample. Choose 1 channel for a mono recording to halve the output to about 5.3 MB per minute.
Common mistake: keeping the WAV as a "master" and deleting the MP3. The WAV holds no more music than the MP3 did, so archive the original. Check that the WAV's byte size is close to duration in seconds × 176,400 plus a small header, and that its length matches the MP3's to the second.

A single WAV file tops out near 4 GB, about 6.8 hours at CD quality, so split very long recordings first.
