Worked example

When an MP3 conversion fails, the cause is usually an undecodable source, invalid settings or the tab running out of memory.

If you see a message saying the file is not an accepted type, the extension or MIME type is not on the list (MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus, WebM). A video file such as .mp4 belongs in the video-to-MP3 tool instead, because this one rejects video types.

"Conversion failed." on a 400 MB WAV from a long field recording usually means the browser ran out of memory while holding the input and the output together. Cut the recording into 10 to 20 minute pieces with the trimmer, convert each, and join them in your editor. Also close other heavy tabs and retry.

If the finished file sounds thin, watery or metallic, you probably chose 96 kbps with a 22.05 kHz rate on music; go back to 192 kbps and keep the source sample rate. If speech sounds one-sided, the source may have had a dead left or right channel, and setting Channels to mono merges what is there.

If the loading step never finishes, reload the page; the converter core is fetched once per session and a blocked network request leaves the button spinning. A file that still fails after that is damaged, so re-export it from the original recorder. Keep the original untouched while you experiment, so each retry starts from the same file.
