Worked example

Convert FLAC to WAV to unpack lossless audio for tools that cannot read FLAC; a 16-bit FLAC returns the same samples at roughly twice the file size.

Both formats are lossless, so nothing is discarded for CD-quality sources (44.1 kHz, 16-bit). The WAV export is 16-bit PCM, though, so a 24-bit hi-res FLAC is reduced to 16-bit, a one-way change. Keep the FLAC original if you need the extra bit depth.

Size math: FLAC typically lands at 50 to 60 percent of PCM, so a 4-minute CD track that is 42.3 MB as WAV comes from a 21 to 25 MB FLAC. A 96 kHz FLAC left on Keep source becomes 96,000 × 2 × 2 = 384,000 bytes per second, 23 MB per minute; choosing 44100 brings it back to 10.6 MB per minute.

Scenario: a band burning a CD, delivering stems to a mastering engineer, or loading a hardware sampler that reads only WAV. Burning software and samplers generally expect 44.1 kHz stereo 16-bit, so set Sample rate to 44100 and leave Channels on Keep source or 2.

Common mistake: converting the WAV back to FLAC and expecting the 24-bit detail to return; it was dropped when the WAV was written. Fix: archive the original FLAC. Check that the file size is about seconds × 176,400 and that the duration matches the FLAC to the second.
