Car rental security deposit, explained

The security deposit is the part of a rental that confuses people most. It is a temporary hold on your credit card's available limit, not a payment, and it is separate from the rental rate you paid.

In your banking app the hold may read as pending, pre-authorization or processing. It does not turn into a charge on your statement unless the company finds a problem at return, such as damage, traffic fines or missing fuel.

The amount is not fixed. It depends on the vehicle category, the rental company, the protection plan, the rental length and the country's rules, and luxury cars and SUVs usually need a bigger hold.

Card rules are strict. It has to be a physical credit card in the renter's name, issued by a traditional bank, with enough available credit; debit and virtual cards do not work, and some combinations call for two cards.

If the car comes back clean, the hold is released in full. It usually clears within several days, though it can officially take up to 30 business days, so keep spare limit on the card during a trip.
