On a trail the phone signal often disappears long before the group splits up. Meshtastic uses LoRa radios to rebroadcast short messages from node to node, and the official project notes that no phone is needed for the mesh itself to work.
The Meshnology N37 is the one the shop recommends for car trips, camping and hiking. It carries an L76K GNSS receiver, so your position can be shared on the mesh, and a 1.3-inch OLED shows what is happening without opening the app.
