A backup channel when the network is down

Storms, outages and remote terrain take cell service away at the worst moment. Meshtastic was designed for areas without existing or reliable communications infrastructure, using LoRa radios that rebroadcast messages node to node.

The red N35 on the Meshnology page is shown on a rock at sunset under the heading Emergency Communication. It is a complete node with battery, case and antenna, so it can sit in a go bag already charged and configured.

The messages are encrypted with AES256-CTR per channel, according to the Meshtastic documentation. The default channel key is a known one, so change it before you rely on privacy.

For a fixed point, a solar relay such as the MeshTower S1 V2 or the SenseCAP P1 keeps the network alive without grid power. Put one on a high spot near home and carry handhelds when you go out.

A plan only works if the radios are set up before the event, and the Region and Modem Preset must match on every device. NEWMESH15 or MESH010 lowers the cost of stocking a few nodes.

FAQ

Is this a replacement for emergency services?

No. A mesh is a backup for short text messages between your own devices.

How long does a node run?

Runtime depends on the battery: the N35 has 3000 mAh and the N30 has 1100 mAh.

Are messages private?

Payloads are encrypted per channel, but you should replace the default channel key first.
