Overbooked flight: what you are owed

Overbooking is legal, which is exactly why the rules exist. If you were on time at check-in with a valid booking and documents, and you did not volunteer to give up the seat, you are entitled to a payout of €250, €400 or €600 by distance.

You also choose how to continue: a ticket refund plus a return flight on a connecting booking, re-routing at the earliest opportunity, or a later flight that suits you. The airline owes meals, refreshments and a hotel when a night is involved.

Not every refusal at the gate qualifies. Safety, security or health reasons, missing travel documents and a skipped earlier flight on the same reservation are listed as other grounds, and they do not pay out like overbooking does.

Under Turkish rules the sums are €100 for domestic flights and €250, €400 or €600 for international ones by distance, and Canadian rules give 900 to 2,400 CAD. Compensair covers each regime, so enter the flight and let it check which one fits.

FAQ

Should I volunteer for a voucher?

Volunteering means you did not involuntarily lose the seat, so the standard payout may not apply. Think before you accept the airline's offer.

Do I get the ticket price back as well?

You can choose reimbursement instead of re-routing. The cash payout for the denied boarding is separate.

What documents prove I was on time?

A booking confirmation, check-in record or boarding pass is enough for Compensair to build the claim.
