Skirting board covers are made for rooms where the old boards are fine but dated. Each cover is a 25mm thick MDF profile with a rebate on the back, and the rebate slides over an existing skirting up to 19mm thick.
Strip-out costs disappear with this approach. Taking old skirting off a wall tears plaster and usually leaves paint damage, so the retailer says skipping that step can save £200 to £400 per room, and it quotes installation as around 50% quicker.
Measure the height of the board that is already fixed, then choose a cover tall enough to hide it. Covers are available from 70mm to 170mm, and the design list runs from Bullnose and Torus to Regency and Oscar.
The hollow back also takes pipework. Central heating pipes, radiator feeds and electrical or ethernet cables can run inside the rebate, which avoids boxing in a pipe and keeps the room proportions intact.
