Reading your prescription: OD, OS, SPH, CYL, AXIS and PD

Glasseslit does not give eye tests. You get your prescription from an optometrist or ophthalmologist, who is required to hand you a copy, and you can ask them to write down your pupillary distance too.

OD means the right eye and OS means the left, and the right eye is listed first. SPH is the sphere power, with a minus for nearsighted and a plus for farsighted correction.

CYL and AXIS appear only if you have astigmatism. CYL is the cylinder power, and AXIS is a number from 0 to 180 that gives the direction. PD is the distance between the centers of your pupils in millimeters, either one number or one per eye.

On the product page you type each value into the matching box, then a confirmation panel repeats them. The store asks you to check the plus and minus signs on sphere and cylinder, because that is where entry mistakes happen. For medical questions, speak to your eye doctor.

FAQ

What if my prescription has no PD?

The store notes that PD is not always included, but it helps in making the glasses fit. Ask your eye doctor to measure it.

What does a binocular PD mean?

It is a single number for both eyes. A monocular PD gives one number for each eye.

How often should I get an eye test?

The store's help page lists age based intervals, from every six months for children under 7 to every two years for ages 16 to 59. Your own eye doctor decides what suits you.
