What to know
EAN-13 has 13 digits: a 3-digit GS1 prefix that indicates the numbering agency, then the company and product part, and a final check digit. Enter 12 digits and the tool appends the thirteenth; enter 13 and it verifies that the last one is correct before drawing.
The check digit rule is fixed. Weight the first 12 digits alternately 1 and 3 from the left, add them, and take (10 minus the sum mod 10) mod 10. For 590123412345 the weighted sum is 83, 83 mod 10 is 3 and 10 minus 3 gives 7, so the full number is 5901234123457, the value the page opens with.
A wrong thirteenth digit is rejected rather than silently changed, with a message saying you need 12 digits or 13 with a valid check digit. Letters, spaces and 14-digit GTINs are refused, since EAN-13 is digits only and exactly 13 long.
The drawing is the standard 95-module pattern with guard bars and printed digits. A valid-looking number is not a registered product, and a retailer or marketplace expects numbers allocated from your own GS1 company prefix, so keep sample values for test labels and mockups.
