What to know

The loan calculator turns a loan amount, an annual rate and a term in years into a monthly schedule. Two methods are available. Equal payment keeps the same total each month, while equal principal repays the same slice of principal each month and starts with a larger payment.

Both methods compute interest monthly on the remaining balance at the annual rate divided by 12, and both round the term to whole months (up to 1,200). The summary shows the monthly payment, the total repayment and the total interest, plus a stacked chart of principal and interest and a month-by-month table.

An optional Extra monthly payment is added to the principal part of every instalment. The page then reports the interest saved and the months saved against the same loan without extra payments, so you can see what 100,000 more a month does to the payoff date.

The schedule can be downloaded as a CSV file with month, payment, principal, interest and balance columns. Amounts follow the chosen currency, and fees, insurance, variable rates and early-repayment charges are not modelled.

Compare offers by running the same loan with two rates: on 1,000,000 over 3 years, 5 percent gives a payment of 29,970.90 and 4.5 percent gives 29,746.92, which saves 224 a month and about 8,063 of total interest. Stretching to 5 years at 5 percent lowers the payment to 18,871.23 but raises the interest to 132,274.02.

Quick answers

Which method costs less interest overall?

Equal principal. On 1,000,000 at 5 percent for 3 years it costs 77,083.33 in interest against 78,952.30 for equal payment.

What is the longest term accepted?
